Osaka, Anisimova Storm Into US Open Semis
Naomi Osaka and Amanda Anisimova return to the court Thursday with a spot in the US Open final on the line.
Osaka extended her unbeaten streak in major quarterfinals to 5-0 with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over No. 11 Karolina Muchova Wednesday night. Each time she’s reached this stage in a major, she’s won the title.
Looking every bit like a two-time US Open winner, Osaka’s defeated three Top-15 seeds in consecutive matches. Osaka can be the first mom to win a major since Kim Clijsters at the 2011 Australian Open.
Just seven weeks after her crushing 6-0, 6-0 loss in the Wimbledon final, Anisimova upset No. 2 Iga Swiatek Wednesday. The 6-4, 6-3 revenge win puts the No. 8 seed into her first US Open semifinal and her third at a major.
She joins Jessica Pegula in the semifinals to extend the streak of two American women reaching the Final Four at Flushing Meadows to the third year in a row. It’s the first time that’s happened since 2002-04.
Anisimova leads Osaka 2-0, both wins came in majors during the 2022 season (Australian Open & French Open).
Both players have dropped one set en route to their semifinal matchup.
Can Sinner Be Stopped?
When Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime square off Friday, it’ll either be the upset of the tournament or another Slam final for the World No. 1.
Sinner reached his fifth straight major semifinal with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti Wednesday night. He extends his hard court win streak at majors to 26, which includes wins at the last two Australian Opens and at Flushing Meadows last year.
The defending champ has dropped just 38 games through five matches and has won 31 consecutive service games.
No. 25 Auger-Aliassime held on to beat No. 8 Alex de Minaur 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (4) in a thrilling match that exceeded four hours. The 87-minute second set was the longest in the men’s tournament.
To reach his second major semifinal, both at the US Open, Auger-Aliassime got past three Top-15 seeds in consecutive matches including the upset over No. 3 Alexander Zverev.
Sinner beat Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals of Cincinnati 6-0, 6-2 a few weeks ago.
Auger-Aliassime last beat Sinner in 2022, excluding a walkover in Madrid in 2024.
