Primetime Recap
Sinner being Sinner. The World No. 1 swept No. 23 seed Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 Monday night. The defending champion has reached at least the quarterfinal round in the last eight Slams, winning four of them. Sinner also extends his streak of hard court wins at majors to 25.
Sinner’s win sets up a meeting with No. 10 Lorenzo Musetti in the first all-Italian men’s Grand Slam quarterfinal match in the Open Era.
Musetti beat Jaume Munar in straights to become the third player born in the 2000s to reach Slam quarterfinals on all three surfaces (Sinner & Alcaraz).
All four men’s matches on Monday resulted in straight set wins.
Amanda Anisimova swept No. 18 Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-0, 6-3 to reach her first US Open quarterfinal, setting up a Wimbledon rematch. The No. 8 seed will face Iga Swiatek just seven weeks after Swiatek won their All England Club final 6-0, 6-0.
“I’m just very excited and it’s going to be a great match, I hope, this time. But I’m feeling good and [Swiatek] is playing some great tennis. So I really hope that we put on a great performance.”
Amanda Anisimova
Swiatek, the 2022 US Open champion, beat No. 13 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in straights and has lost one set all tournament. The 24-year-old is the youngest woman to reach all four Grand Slam quarterfinals in a single season since Maria Sharapova in 2005.
Osaka's Dominant Victory Over Gauff
Naomi Osaka defeated No. 3 seed Coco Gauff in the highly anticipated matchup between multi-time major winners. Osaka, the No. 23 seed, won 6-3, 6-2 to reach her first quarterfinal at a Slam since 2021. Each time Osaka has reached this round in a major, she’s won the title.
Gauff said she made too many mistakes in the match, including 33 unforced errors and five double faults. The French Open champion added that she plans to focus on improving her serve for the rest of the season.
Osaka will next face No. 11 Karolina Muchova, who advanced to her third straight US Open quarterfinal after beating No. 27 seed Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-7(0), 6-3. She joins Marketa Vondrousova and Barbora Krejcikova as the three Czech women to reach the elite eight.
Monday’s match was Muchova’s fourth straight this tournament to last more than two hours, including her opening-round win over Venus Williams.
Muchova and Osaka have split their four meetings, with Osaka winning the most recent matchup at the Australian Open earlier this year.
De Minaur, Auger-Aliassime Set Up QF Clash
Alex de Minaur opened Monday’s play with a win over Leandro Riedi 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in just 93 minutes. He’s into the quarterfinals for the second-straight year at the US Open. De Minaur has won 11 of his last 12 matches, including taking the title in D.C. this summer. Though, he’s still looking to reach his first major semifinal.
Felix Auger-Aliassime continues his impressive play at Flushing Meadows, taking down No. 15 seed Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. The Canadian returns to the quarters of a Slam for the fourth time. He’ll look to beat a top-15 seed in his third consecutive match.
Auger-Aliassime holds a 2-1 record over de Minaur. Both wins came on hard courts, but were in 2022.
