Djokovic, Alcaraz Set Semifinal Showdown
Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz handled their quarterfinal matches to set up a blockbuster on Friday, which will be their first-ever meeting at the US Open.
Djokovic is into his 14th US Open semifinal, and a record-extending 53rd at a major. He’s already a four-time champion in New York, and a fifth would mark his historic 25th Grand Slam title. At 38, he’s advanced to the semifinals at all four Slams in the same season for a record seventh time.
After a 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win over No. 4 Taylor Fritz, the No. 7 seed improves to 16-0 against Americans at the US Open, and 11-0 against Fritz. The American men’s major drought will stretch at least another year.
Alcaraz reached his third consecutive major semifinal after beating No. 20 seed Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. The No. 2 seed hasn’t dropped a set all tournament and has held serve in 68 of 69 service games.
The winner of 35 of his last 36 matches, the Spaniard continues his impressive season by reaching his first semifinal of a hard court Slam since the 2023 US Open. How will he prepare for the match? Playing golf with 2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia.
Alcaraz trails Djokovic 5-3 in their head-to-head, and has yet to win a match against him on hard courts.
Djokovic eliminated Alcaraz from the quarterfinals in Australia earlier this year.
Sabalenka, Pegula Ready For Rematch
It will be a rematch of the 2024 US Open women’s final when No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka meets No. 4 Jessica Pegula on Thursday.
Sabalenka advanced after Marketa Vondrousova withdrew due to a knee injury. The 2023 Wimbledon champion had beaten two Top-10 seeds (No. 7 Jasmine Paolini & No. 9 Elena Rybakina) this tournament.
The defending champion reaches her fifth consecutive major semifinal, and fifth straight at Flushing Meadows. Sabalenka is looking to reach her third major final this season, and to win her fourth Grand Slam.
Pegula secured her spot after a 6-3, 6-3 win over Barbora Krejcikova, becoming the first woman to reach back-to-back US Open semifinals without dropping a set since Serena Williams, who did so from 2011-2014.
Finding her form after a 2-3 record on hard courts before New York, Pegula has dropped just 23 games so far this tournament. Though, she’s yet to play a Top-50 opponent. If she wins on Thursday, Pegula will be the fourth different American to reach a major final in 2025 (Keys, Gauff, Anisimova).
Sabalenka holds a 7-2 advantage over Pegula, including last year’s title win in New York. Pegula’s last win over Sabalenka came in 2023.
