Quick Served: Wimbledon Day 12
Men’s semi-final recap and the women’s final preview
Context-free soundbite: “How old was Dean Goldfine when he had a bar mitzvah?”
Today’s semi-finals were straightforward, but Andy and JW found a lot to unpack about both matches and what they mean going forward. Plus, they preview the women’s final—and disagree on who will win.

The Rundown
Alexander Zverev def. Arthur Fery 7-6, 6-2, 6-4
Arthur Fery [WC] was supposed to be coming back from vacation in Greece today. Instead, he played the Wimbledon semi-final as the second-lowest-ranked man ever to do so. He started the match with a hold, and when he got broken early, he broke right back and thrilled the crowd with this very Fery get:
But Fery lost focus in the first-set tiebreak, and that was all it took for Alexander Zverev [2] to relax and find his rhythm. Fery never saw another break point and won only five more points on Zverev’s serve through two sets.
🎤 Alexander Zverev
“I know that 99.99% of the stadium was wanting Arthur to win. But it was such an incredible atmosphere, such a fair crowd as well, I enjoyed every second of it.”
Jannik Sinner def. Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4
The seven-time champ was half a step slow, by his own admission, and couldn’t keep up with the world No. 1.
🎤 Novak Djokovic
“It was a good old blowout. He was just much better today. I was not sharp enough, not balanced enough, not reactive enough to play him today.”
Djokovic also credited Sinner’s serve, saying it has become much more difficult to read since he changed his technique a couple of years ago. He said he would like to play one more at Wimbledon, at least.
🎤 Jannik Sinner
“What Novak is still showing, it’s true inspiration, not only for you guys, but for the new generation of players.”

Number of men who have made the final of all four Slams in the Open Era
Alexander Zverev joined the exclusive list of ATP players to final all the majors. He had never been past the fourth round of Wimbledon before this year. If he wins the title, he will be the first man in the Open Era to win his first two Slams back to back.
