Primetime Recap
Gauff Survives, Osaka Advances
Coco Gauff held on to win her first match since bringing on biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan to help improve her serve. Despite ten double faults, and being broken six times, Gauff held on in a three-set thriller over Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5.
The two-time major winner said she’ll continue to work on her new serving motion as she looks to claim her second title in Flushing Meadows.
No. 23 Naomi Osaka won 12 of the last 14 points to clinch her win over Greet Minnen in straight sets. This is the first Slam the four-time major winner is seeded in since the 2022 Australian Open.
Zverev & Paul Sweep
Alexander Zverev began his 2025 US Open campaign with a straight set win over Alejandro Tabilo to close out play on Arthur Ashe. The No. 3 seed is back in the second round of a major after losing his first match at Wimbledon. He reached the US Open final five years ago
Tommy Paul beat Elmer Moller in the first round of a major for the second time this year. The No. 14 seeded American backed up his Roland-Garros victory with a win over Moller in straights.
The win marks Paul’s 10th at a Grand Slam this year and he said he’s “feeling great” after injuries impacted his play at both Wimbledon and Roland-Garros.
Women’s Recap
No. 50 for No. 2
Iga Swiatek regained her World No. 2 ranking ahead of the US Open and got off to a dominant start, beating Emiliana Arango 6-1, 6-2 on Tuesday. She's now the only woman to win 50 or more matches in each of the last four years.
The 2022 US Open Champion also broke Monica Seles’ record for most consecutive opening match wins in the Open Era (65).
*Insert Taylor Swift pun here*: In Swiatek’s post match press conference, she spoke less about her tennis, and more about Swift’s engagement.
Looking Ahead
Amanda Anisimova and Maya Joint each earned straight set wins Tuesday and set up an intriguing second round match. The American bounced back in her first Grand Slam match since losing the Wimbledon final, while Joint, 19, is having a career year which includes winning her first two WTA titles. They’ll meet on Thursday for the first time.
The two upsets of the day are credited to Lara Siegemund who beat No. 20 Diana Shnaider and Ashlyn Krueger who defeated No. 26 Sofia Kenin.
Other notable results include: No. 27 Marta Kostyuk beating Katie Boulter, Hailey Baptiste advancing past Katerina Siniakova, and No. 18 Beatriz Haddad Maia outlasting Sonay Kartal in three sets.
We’re still in our Venus Era: Venus Williams accepted a wild card to play doubles with Leylah Fernandez.
Men’s Recap
Seeded Sweep
A good day for seeded players, including the defending champion. Jannik Sinner looked just fine after retiring from last week’s Cincinnati final with illness, sweeping Vit Kopriva and dropping only four games Tuesday afternoon. The Italian can be the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to defend the US Open title. All the men’s seeds in action Tuesday took care of business and advanced to the second round.
Comeback Kids
Francisco Cerundolo and Stefanos Tsitsipas both mounted comebacks on Tuesday. Cerundolo, the No. 19 seed, rallied from two sets down to win the last three against Matteo Arnaldi, snapping a streak of first‑round losses at the majors after early exits at both Wimbledon and Roland Garros.
Tsitsipas, meanwhile, dropped the opening set to Alexandre Muller before finding his form and rolling through the next three. The No. 26 seed evened his US Open record to 7–7 and scored a much‑needed victory after a difficult stretch since Paris.
As Jon Wertheim said, a little something for everyone on Tuesday, including five-set battles. Tristan Schoolkate, Daniel Altmaier, and Roman Safiullin all pulled out wins in matches that went the distance.
