Swiatek Sweeps Cincinnati Clean
Iga Swiatek didn’t drop a set all tournament as she capped off her flawless run at the Cincinnati Open with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Jasmine Paolini in Monday’s final. She improves to 105-0 after winning the opening set at WTA 1000 events.
With her first Cincinnati title, she regains the World No. 2 ranking and will be the second seed at next week’s US Open.
Swiatek qualified for the year-end WTA Finals for a fifth consecutive year.
Only Serena Williams has won more WTA 1000-level titles (13) than Swiatek (11) since 2009.
No rest for the champ as Swiatek is scheduled to play in Tuesday’s mixed doubles event with Casper Ruud at the US Open
Carlos Crowned After Sinner Retires
Carlos Alcaraz won the Cincinnati Open in just 22 minutes after Jannik Sinner retired while trailing 0-5 in the first set due to illness. It’s Alcaraz’s sixth title of 2025, his eighth ATP Masters 1000 trophy, and it extends his win streak at Masters events to 17. He also moves ahead of Sinner in the race for year-end No. 1.
Sinner, last year’s Cincinnati and US Open champ, revealed he hadn’t been feeling well but hoped to be ready for the final. This was the fourth meeting between the New 2 in a final this season. Rematch in NYC?
Battle for No. 1: If Sinner and Alcaraz meet in the US Open final, the winner will also claim the top ranking.
Sinner’s streak of 26 consecutive hard court match wins ended Monday.
Mixed Madness: Both Alcaraz and Sinner are scheduled to compete in Tuesday’s US Open Mixed Doubles first round, but Sinner’s participation is now in question.
