Anisimova Wins China Open Title
Amanda Anisimova defeated Linda Noskova 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 to win the WTA 1000 China Open on Sunday. The American beat four Top 30 ranked opponents in Beijing, including No. 3 Coco Gauff in the semifinals.
The 24-year-old won her second WTA 1000 of the season, having also taken the title in Doha in February, shortly after reaching the US Open final. The World No. 4 officially qualified for next month’s WTA Finals.
Though, Anisimova withdrew from this week’s Wuhan Open, the last WTA 1000 event of the season, with a left calf injury.
Aryna Sabalenka returns to the court for the first time since her US Open title. Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Mirra Andreeva are also in the draw.
Qinwen Zheng is out with an elbow injury and Emma Raducanu retired from her match Tuesday morning.
Sinner’s Retirement Shuffles Shanghai Draw
There have been major shakeups at the Shanghai Masters as defending champion Jannik Sinner retired from his third round match on Sunday against Tallon Griekspoor due to cramping.
On Monday, World No. 3 Alexander Zverev lost to Arthur Rinderknech in the Round of 32. Taylor Fritz, seeded fifth, is also out after losing to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, leaving No. 4 Novak Djokovic as the highest seed remaining. World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew before the tournament began.
The door is now open for players hoping to qualify for the ATP Finals. Alex de Minaur, Lorenzo Musetti, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Holger Rune, face a significant opportunity to gain valuable rankings points ahead of Turin. Musetti and Auger-Aliassime meet in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.
Zverev Accuses Tournaments of Favoritism
Remember when Roger Federer joined Served at the Laver Cup and said he’d like to see more variety when it comes to court speed?
Well, Alexander Zverev claimed tournament organizers are slowing down courts to favor Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Sinner responded by saying he and Alcaraz don’t make the courts, it’s not their decision, and they try to adapt in every situation.
