As Matthew Futterman highlights, the relentless pressure and isolation of elite tennis take a massive psychological toll. A reminder of why mental performance resources and early holistic support are critical!!

Thank you so much for this excellent primer-via-interview and reading recommendation, Megan. It is hard to be a fan of “single player” sports when you know there is no team institution or players’ union to create a protective bubble around the athletes. Far too much control and power over someone’s entire childhood and career track is put into the hands of a small few (and none of them are the athlete themself). I appreciate that your conversation included an acknowledgment that there is nothing the average fan can do to change this, and that we can hold two thoughts at the same time. Pro athletes do superhuman things that we can enjoy, but they also need protecting, just like the test of us.
